The User Guide to Student Elections

As a student at Southern Virginia University, you've probably noticed the all the posters and food bribes around campus this week. It can be intimidating to try to navigate this mixture of college life and politics. Both can be terrifying enough on their own. This is our attempt to help.

Student Body President- The Student Body President functions as the face of the students to the faculty, conducts senate meetings, and has the authority and capacity to facilitate positive change.

The Candidates-

Rex Winslow- Currently serving as Vice President of Arts and Athletics, Winslow is a prominent face at almost every game played by SVU. It is quite clear that Rex Winslow has school spirit. However, his presence in the race for student body president is the complete opposite of his Green Meany alter ego. Propelled only by reputation and word of mouth, Mr. Winslow is the second most mysterious candidate in this race.

Is Winslow unprepared for this race, over confident in the power of his reputation, or just waiting to surprise us all?

James David Drasbek- Known around campus as J.D., Drasbek is an expert at forming study groups. This current Junior class president knows how to listen and take feedback from others. When asking fellow students their thoughts on elections, it seems that J.D. is the most approachable and relatable of the three candidates. He makes a point to say hello to everyone and know them by name. Completely genuine, this is just a part of who Drasbek is.

Ryan Logan- Showing the most united front, Ryan Logan for President and Melissa Gardner for Vice President of Operations are endorsed by the likes of Grumpy Cat. Popularily know as "Hott Ryan", Ryan Logan is an example of quiet and humble service to those around him. He is motivated by a desire to have stronger communication between the administration and the students. A closet video gamer, Gardner's enthusiasm and talents are an asset to any situation in which she is placed. She is passionate about helping students feel and become actively involved in their own education.

Vice President of Operations- The "This Week at SVU" emails you get all the time? Yeah, The Vice President of Operations does that (among other things...).

Candidates-

The Incombent VP of Operations, John-John Leake, is clearly a talented individual. Leake posesses an entertaining stage presence with Shenanigans and a musical skill he is willing to share with the community. His poster's claim is interesting, however. "Your current VP of Ops with plans to do better." Of course we all want to be trying to continually be better, but this phrase sounds a bit like an apology...

Vice President of Campus Programming- The mastermind behind the scenes of all your major campus events.

Ammon Milligan- Ammon Milligan is a bright little ball of sunshine. He loves being a part of the activities committee and desires to make sure that future events are appealing to all students. He wants your feedback and he'll listen.

Daphne Riddle-

Less known than most of the other candidates, Daphne presents almost a resume to the student body of her history and experience in this position. If the word "classy" scares you, don't worry. With posts about monocles and references to "Parks and Recreation", you probably shouldn't worry about boring activities. You should worry, however, about Colonel Mustard in the ballroom with a wrench.

Vice President of Academics and Service- This student leads Service council, acts as a leason between the community and the school in providing service throughout the community, and shows appreciation towards professors.

Erik Flores- Flores has proved through his involvement in Institute and campus that he knows how to serve and loves to do just that.

Keri Jensen- Keri Jensen is self proclaimed as "shy", but speaks with clarity and determination in presenting her goals for this coming term. She is straight forward and merely by running in this race is showing how much this means to her. Jensen will make a difference.

Vice President of Finance- This student's job is to manage finances for student life, including service, activities, and fundraise.

Jake McMahon

Jake McMahon is a business major and member of Fading Point. He humbly and meaningfully contributes to his classes and this campus. P.S. Tell him congratulations on his recent engagement.

Alan Porter - Not one to seek out attention, Alan Porter is the one many go to for help in their classes (specifically Computer Science classes). He has much knowledge and kindness to contribute to Southern Virginia University. In the running for a job that requires care and thoughtfulness, Porter has that covered.

Vice President of Honor- Presides over Honor Council. Basically, who would you want to stand before if you were in trouble?

Rebekah Taylor-

Rebekah Taylor is probably used to being grouped as "a Taylor". Just in case you do, she includes a photo with her brother. Taylor is made for this position completely on her own, however. If this position is about honor and the ability to listen, she fits the bill.

Brigham Doxey- A strong presence at SVU, Brigham Doxy is actively involved in almost every aspect. He is obviously talented in many areas and he freely shares those talents through music and acting, for example. As an R.A., Doxy is no stranger to problem solving and quiet correction. He does what needs to be done in a dignified and respectful manner.

Vice President of Arts and Athletics- This Student's job is to raise school spirit and promote Arts and Athletics.

Colin Smith- Another multi-talented student, Colin Smith definitely shows his personality through his posters. He is involved in both the Arts and Athletics and brings a passion in those areas.

Rylee McKeon- Rylee McKeon is one of the younger candidates, but also surprisingly one of the most qualified. Both Artistic and Athletic, McKeon knows how to work hard. She is motivated to run (for office, not cross country, although she is excellent at that...) because she desires to make a real change. She knows how to do what is needed, such as fundraise and wants to build a stronger relationship with the town.

Good Luck! When in doubt, just vote for Saxon.
