Interview with Mimi Knowles

What is your story?

There was always music around; sung, did choir, but I didn’t think it was anything I could really, really do.

Went on my mission, came home, kinda did it (music) for a while, but nothing really serious

But then I went through a huge break up, really really hard

I remember the exact date, it was April 12th of last year that I really decided to pursue music and it was one of those huge revelations like “THIS IS WHAT YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO DO”

so I dropped out of school, left work, and just started really focusing; started teaching guitar and playing out all the time and then it was just like lightening. It’s funny how when you set your mind to something and really commit to it, how things open up for you.

Do have any little moments that have confirmed to you that this is what you are supposed to do?

Yeah, a lot. Here’s a really cool one, though. I did an acoustic EP like 2 years ago. I just did so my fans would have something and there were some songs that I really liked, but didn’t think about very much and then I got this message on facebook from a girl and she asked me about one of the songs I had on my EP,so I told her about it and where it came from. She was like “this song has always really touched my heart. I was going through a really hard time and whenever I would have that moment, I would listen to this song and it would help me get through.” And so she actually had me come to her school and I played the guitar while she sang my song. That really, really, touched me and was a testament that “ok, you’re on the right track.”

What would you say to people who are going through those low points?

Well it’s funny that you said that , because, actually, these last couple days, I have spurts of depression and depression’s such a jerk. It comes on, there’s no reason. You’re sad and you don’t know why. And people are like “Why are you sad?” You’re like “I don’t know!” and that just makes you more sad because you don’t know. So it’s a real thing and I was going through that a lot these last couple days. What’s helped me get through it is my friends and family, keeping them close and then also, your passions; like, why you get up in the morning. Music has saved me in more than one way. And it’s cool, because like in that story I told, through music helping me, I’m able to help someone else as well.

What would you tell people who wish they could be like you?

I think if they want to be like me, then they should be like themselves.

I have a clothing line, too and one of the campaigns of it is “Be yourselfie” and I just really believe in that, That no one can be yourself better than you can and that’s why we’re here to be ourselves. So do that.
